Spotlight: Mystery around MH370 hopefully to surface amid confirmed debris

News | 06.08.2015 | 10:23

Xinhua - Malaysian authorities have confirmed the recently discovered debris belonged to the missing Malaysian MH370 flight, kindling hopes the mystery around the flight be finally brought into light.

A wing segment, known as a flaperon, has been confirmed as part of the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, Malaysian authorities announced early Thursday, 17 months after its vanished.

"Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced early Thursday.

"We now have physical evidence that, as I announced on March 24 last year, flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean," Najib said.

"This is indeed a major breakthrough for us in resolving the disappearance of MH370. We expect and hope that there would be more objects to be found which would be able to help resolve this mystery."

Nevertheless, what's being announced is far from enough for those concerned about the flight, especially for the families and relatives of the 239 victims.

Examination on the plane wreckage found last week on French overseas island La Runion was started Wednesday in France.

Xavier Tytelman, an expert on aviation security, pinned down significance of "legal proof" in deciding links between debris and lost aircraft.

Evidence may be provided by a serial number that corresponds to the right plane or through an analysis of the painting as it has a chemical trace, much like a digital print which will be very specific and correspond only to MH370, said the former military pilot.

Experts in Paris have avoided being too assertive in saying they have "very strong presumption" the debris comes from the missing Malaysian jetliner.

Deputy Paris prosecutor Serge Mackowiak told reporters this was based on technical data from the manufacturer and airline but gave no indication that a serial number or unique markings that would put the link beyond doubt.

Boeing representatives confirmed that the flaperon came from a 777 jet "due to its technical characteristics, mentioning the color, the structure of the joints," he said.

According to Tytelman, technical analysis is intended to identify if the debris suffered a shock and if yes, what was the angle and intensity of the shock.

"It will also be studied, whether there were chemical traces: for example, traces of explosives or fire," he said.

For Tytelman, the wreckage examination will offer great chances to unveil the mystery of the missing Boeing 777, including where and in what circumstances it went down.

Mackowiak told reporters that a fragment of suitcase also found on the island would be subjected to forensic examination by French gendarme police "as soon as possible."

Prior to the latest discovery, a massive surface and underwater hunt had failed to locate the plane, which went missing on March 8, 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. A total of 239 people were on board the flight, most of them Chinese.

China willing to work with U.S. to contribute to world peace, stability: FM

News | 06.08.2015 | 10:25

Xinhua - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here Wednesday that China is willing to work with the U.S. side to make full preparations to ensure the success of Chinese President Xi Jinping's historic state visit to the United States in September.

The visit will not only make further arrangements for mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and push forward the new major-country relations between the two countries, but will also jointly send positive signals to the international community, Wang said at a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the ongoing ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Wang said China is ready to step up cooperation with the United States in the fields of investment, military, climate change, finance, economy and trade, energy, hunt of corrupt officials, justice and public health.

China also wishes to join hands with the United States in strengthening coordination and collaboration on regional and international issues concerning the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Iran nuclear program, Middle East, counter-terrorism and Afghanistan so as to play a constructive role in safeguarding world peace and stability.

Wang emphasized that it is all the more important now for both China and the United States to properly handle two major issues - strategic mutual trust and sound interaction in the Asia-Pacific region.

Noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of World War II, Wang said it was the joint efforts of China, the United States and some other countries at that time that established an international order and system with the United Nations at its core.

China is a constructor and defender of the current international system, and as changes have taken place in the international situation, China is also willing to make concerted efforts with other countries to reform and improve the system so as to make it better accommodate the common wishes of all countries in the world.

Wang stressed China has no intention of edging the United States out of Asia as the U.S. has its practical interests in the Asia-Pacific, and rather China would like to see the United States play a positive role in the region.

Lots of problems won't get solved without cooperation between China and the United States, he said, adding that China is willing to realize sound interaction with the United States in the Asia- Pacific and contribute to the healthy development of China-U.S. relations.

Kerry said Washington is willing to work together with Beijing to ensure the success of Xi's visit. The United States supports a strong and prosperous China, and would like to see China go ahead with further development.

The United States is ready to establish strategic mutual trust with China and will explore sound interaction in handling Asia- Pacific affairs, Kerry said.

He said the United States has never sought to confront China in the region. Washington appreciates the important and positive role Beijing has played in the Iran nuclear program, Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and climate change, among others.

Kerry said the United States will continue to deepen cooperation with China in various fields, and also highly appreciates China's prominent contribution to the Global War Against Fascism.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in the South China Sea.

Wang stressed that China has adopted a "dual-track" approach in addressing the South China Sea issue with the ASEAN countries and established a mechanism for negotiations of the issue.

China and the ASEAN countries have also established a new platform for risk management and peaceful discussion of proposals raised by parties concerned, Wang said.

He said China always commits itself to peaceful settlement of disputes with related countries through consultation and negotiation, and countries outside the region should respect the efforts of China and the ASEAN countries.

Kerry said Washington is concerned about the situation in the South China Sea, but will not intervene in specific disputes. The United States supports China to resolve the South China Sea disputes with related countries through peaceful negotiations.

On Wednesday, Wang also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murrary McCully, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, and Pakistan's National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz.

Russia: Coming Back to Middle East as Major Actor

Andrei AKULOV | 06.08.2015 | 00:00

The world attention has been focused on the Middle East recently. The ebb and flow of the war against the Islamic State, the stalemated Syrian civil war, the framework agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program, the situation in Iraq, the war in Yemen, the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia in open rift over Iran – all these events have been hitting the radar screen in recent months. Another aspect worth of mentioning is the emergence of Russia as a relevant player that could have a major impact on the situation in the volatile region. Moscow’s recent decision to deliver S300 air defense systems to Iran is just another example of its return.
Iraqi Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi visited Moscow in late July. The parties signed a bilateral agreement on military-technical cooperation. The details of the new agreement are not known yet. Last year Russia concluded a major arms deal with Iraq; an indication of the Baghdad-based government's frustration at its dealings with the USA. As the Islamic State seized big chunks of Iraqi territory Russia rushed to supply Iraq with SU-25 attack aircraft, Mi-28NE and Mi-35 combat helicopters, TOS-1A multiple rocket launchers, Pantsir-S1 medium range surface-to-air and anti-aircraft artillery weapon systems, Jigit man-portable SAMs, artillery pieces and BRM-3M reconnaissancevehicles.
Khaled al-Obeidi said that the Americans are not very good when there is «a war of attrition» going on where Iraq needs large amounts of military supplies. He expressed gratitude for Russia’s readiness to provide all-round assistance to his country. «The war we are waging is not a traditional one. We are building our armed forces in peacetime… Our enemy is changing its tactic every month, every day and we need adequate weapons to respond to this», al-Obeidi stressed.
Despite the billions of dollars spent on training and equipment by the United States during its eight-year occupation, Iraq's million-strong army completely folded when insurgents attacked last year. Islamic State militants overran the Iraqi city of Ramadi some time ago in the most significant setback for the Baghdad government in a year, exposing the weakness of Iraq’s army and the limitations of U.S. air strikes. Last month the group seized full control of Palmyra in neighboring Syria.
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter visited Iraq on July 20 for talks with Iraqi officials and Sunni tribal leaders, as well as US commanders. The surprise visit was his first in Iraq since he took office earlier this year. The next day he flew to Irbil for unannounced talks with Masoud Barzani, the President of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. In late April, the House Armed Services Committee introduced a bill calling to directly arm "Kurdish Peshmerga and Sunni tribal forces" with a "national security mission" in Iraq. Iraqi reactions to a bill laid bare the extent of the divisions among Iraqi groups. Members of the Iraqi parliament's Shia-majority bloc, the Iraqi National Alliance (INA), passed a resolution in early May to reject it. The parliamentarians representing Kurdish and Sunni Arab-dominated blocs boycotted the vote.
Iraq is angry with US military aid going around Baghdad straight to Kurds and Sunnis. In April the Iraqi Ministry of Defense has denounced the bill now in the US Senate that would send weapons to the Kurdish Peshmerga for the war against the Islamic State, according to an official's statement to Rudaw. »We will reject the arming of the Peshmerga directly by the US», said Iraq’s Defense Minister Khalid Al-Obeidi.
The cooperation with Iraq is an element of major trend as Russia’s presence in the region becomes a factor to reckon with. It has military cooperation agreements with Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and Jordan.
Moscow’s biggest and most reliable regional customer, Algeria, has acquired $7.5 billion worth of military hardware from Russia since 2006, including MiG-29 and Su-30 fighters, S-300 missile systems and T-90 tanks.
Last year, Russia signed deals worth more than $3, 5 billion deal with Egypt and about $4,2 billion deal with Iraq for aircraft, rockets and missile systems. Egypt appears to be one of Moscow’s largest customers. Two major deals signed in 2014 worth over $6.5 billion for MiG-29Ms, Mi-35s, S-300 SAMs, mobile coastal defense missiles and submarines, as well as the opening of the Russian helicopter maintenance center in Egypt scheduled for 2015 are the most recent transactions.
Within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Russia has been fostering close relationships with influential regional power brokers. Russia and the UAE are reported in talks about selling Russian MiG jets to the Emiratis and launching joint production of weapons.
It’s not military cooperation only. The Russian government has signed major nuclear cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan since the start of this year increasing its influence among traditional U.S. allies in the region.
In February, Russia and Egypt secured a preliminary deal in which Russia signaled its willingness to assist Egypt in building its first nuclear power plant. The agreement was announced during President Vladimir Putin’s February visit to Cairo, during which he also solidified Russia’s overall political and trade relationships with his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.
Shortly thereafter, the Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission and Russia’s Rosatom, the state-run nuclear energy corporation, agreed on a plan for the construction of Jordan’s first nuclear power plant. Under the agreement two nuclear reactors of 1000 megawatts each would be built.
In June, Russia closed a major deal on nuclear cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia. Since the end of the last decade the Saudis have been implementing plans to construct as many as 16 commercial nuclear power plants. Russia is now expected to play a sizable role in operating the nuclear plants, which are still to be built. The Saudis have indicated that a nuclear program will free up oil reserves to be used almost exclusively for foreign sales that generate hard currency earnings.
It’s worth to note here that Moscow and Riyadh maintain high-profile ties despite the reshuffle in the Saudi leadership following the death of King Abdullah in January. The Saudis have also expressed their desire to buy a certain number of Russian tanks and ‘Iskander-E’ complexes, to implement joint projects on the basis of the Russian GLONASS system, and in addition, to invest in agriculture and even in «Russian Housing and Communal Services».
In July, Riyadh agreed to invest some $10 billion to the Russian economy within the next 4-5 years. These funds will boost Russia’s economy against the background of Western economic sanctions. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir will make his first visit to Russia in mid-August to discuss pressing topics on bilateral agenda, as well as international issues. The ministers will also discuss the King of Saudi Arabia’s visit to Russia, which is scheduled for the end of this year.
* * *
Russia has returned to the Middle East to become a major player. This is the most volatile region in the world with burning problems to tackle at the international level. Any effort to do it without Russia is doomed to failure.

Hiroshima commemorates 70th anniversary of atomic bombing

News | 06.08.2015 | 10:32

Xinhua - Hiroshima, the city that suffered U.S. atomic bombing in 1945 during the World War Two, commemorated the 70th anniversary of the bombing on Thursday at the city's Peace Memorial Park, with its mayor calling for peace and elimination of nuclear weapons.

About 55,000 people attended the ceremony, including survivors of the attack, their descendants, peace activists and representatives from about 100 countries and regions.

Kazumi Matsui, mayor of the city, made a peace declaration to the audience. He referred to the loss of lives and culture and the sufferings caused by the atomic bombing and called on policy makers of the world to abolish nuclear weapons and to "create versatile security systems that do not depend on military might".

Although he made no direct reference to the controversial security-related bills being discussed in the upper house of the Diet, he urged the world leaders to promote "the path to true peace revealed by the pacifism of the Japanese constitution."

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the ceremony and delivered a speech calling for a nuclear-weapon-free world.

"Japan is the only country in the world that has suffered atomic bombing in war. It is our mission to convey to the world and to the coming generations the inhumane nature of nuclear weapons," he said.

As Abe spoke, shouts of protest rang out from the audience and around the park. "We strongly oppose the security-related bills." "Retract the war bills." shouted the protesters, holding banners.

Japan's pacifist constitution bans the country from using force outside Japan, but the security-related bills being pushed by the Abe administration in the Diet would allow Japan to fight wars.

The bills are considered as a violation of the constitution by over 90 percent of the country's experts on legislation.

After the ceremony, a group formed by victims of the atomic bombing expressed to Abe their hope that the government could retract the security bills but got negative answer from the prime minister.

To accelerate Japan's surrender in the WWII, the U.S. forces dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945. Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces on Aug. 15, 1945, bringing an end to the war.

Bad News for US: China, Russia Bolstering Military Cooperation in Asia

News | 06.08.2015 | 00:46
Sputnik - Further rapprochement in Sino-Russian relations, especially in the defense and security field, is bad news for the United States, says American academic Peter Harris.
As Russia and China announce their plans to conduct joint military drills in the Peter the Great Gulf, the largest gulf of the Sea of Japan, Washington's strategic planners are racking their brains over how to preserve the American status quo in the "increasingly multipolar" world.
"Rising and resurgent powers like China and Russia are not (yet) true peer competitors of the United States, but they increasingly threaten to challenge US primacy in discrete theaters — especially when acting in concert," Peter Harris, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Colorado State University, pointed out.
According to the scholar, Washington still considers Russia a "serious potential adversary" and although Sino-Russian fleets "are no match" for the US Navy, a concentration of their naval forces could become a major hindrance to the US' ability to project power in the East Asian region during a "major diplomatic crisis" or "militarized dispute."
"In short, China and Russia are much better placed to deter the US from exerting itself in East Asia when they act together than when either of them acts alone," Harris emphasized.
After holding joint naval exercises in the Mediterranean, Moscow and Beijing are planning to conduct a new round of military drills along the coast of Russia's Primorsky Region, in the Peter the Great Gulf. The exercise "Joint-Sea 2015-II" will take place from August 20 to 28, according to China's Defense Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Yang Yujun.
"This exercise is code-named Joint-Sea 2015-II, and the purpose of the exercise is to consolidate and develop the China-Russia all-round strategic coordination partnership, to deepen the pragmatic and friendly cooperation between the Chinese and Russian militaries, and… to further enhance their capabilities of jointly coping with maritime security threats," Yang Yujun elaborated during a monthly Defense Ministry press conference.

Harris noted that the countries do not need to become "firm friends" in order to pose a substantial threat to US dominance in Northeast Asia and beyond. If Sino-Russian strategic interests intersect at a moment when Washington is trying to "assert itself" in the region, the countries may deal a heavy blow to America's geostrategic plans.
US-Russian tensions over Ukraine and Washington's consistent efforts to assert its supremacy in the Asia Pacific region and contain China's political and military rise are only adding fuel to the fire.
The academic doubts that China and Russia will establish an offensive alliance against the United States. "Instead, the more likely danger is that the combined Sino-Russian militaries will require that Washington increase its presence in East Asia" or accept that "Pax Americana" cannot be extended to the regions where "a credible Sino-Russian deterrent exists."
Although the United States has enjoyed pre-eminent position in Asia Pacific since the Second World War, the region's emerging powers are shifting the established status quo, pushing ahead a new multi-polar world order.

  • Nie wieder Hiroshima, nie wieder Nagasaki, nie wieder Auschwitz!
  • Nie wieder ethnische Säuberungen!
  • Nie wieder Faschismus!
  • Nie wieder Krieg!

**The Hiroshima and Nagasaki film they didn't want us to see

    Hochgeladen am 06.08.2011
The film Hiroshima-Nagasaki 1945 was created in 1968 from Japanese footage that the US Defense Department had kept hidden for over 20 years. The filmmaker Erik Barnouw offered his 16 minute film to all the US main channels. None of them showed it. Why is obvious when looking at this three minute excert.

The atom bombs dropped by the US on those Japenese cities served no military purpose, as the Japanese were already suing for peace. President Truman, who ordered the bombs to be dropped, lied to the American people when he said that the atom bombs had saved lives and there were few civilian deaths. Up to 200,000 were killed.

Seeing the barbarous effect of these weapons, did our political and military leaders decide to rid the world of them? Far from it. Today's nuclear weapons make the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs look like water pistols in comparison, and there are enough of them to destroy not just cities but the whole world.
